Low Impedance Speakers
Low impedance speakers are the ideal choice over 100V line speakers when performance and quality are required. While 100V speaker systems are excellent for background audio over larger distances and multi-zone situations, a low impedance system is necessary for installations that require extended lower frequency response such as bass.
Low impedance speakers are typically used in small to medium-sized installations such as homes, small offices, or retail spaces. These speakers have a standard impedance rating (usually 4, 6, or 8 ohms) and are connected directly to the amplifier output.
They are suitable for installations where the distance between the amplifier and the speakers is relatively short. Low impedance speakers are preferred when high-fidelity audio reproduction is desired, such as in home audio systems, recording studios, or venues where sound quality is paramount.
Low Impedance Speakers | What does it all mean?
For almost every speaker or set of headphones you can buy, you'll find a specification for impedance. Understanding impedance can be complicated, but you don't need to understand everything to get what it means.
Impedance, measured in ohms (Ω), measures electrical resistance in an AC circuit. In the context of speakers, impedance indicates how much resistance the speaker provides to the current flowing from an amplifier. Most speakers have impedance ratings that range between 4 and 8 ohms, but some models can go as low as 2 ohms or as high as 16 ohms.
Matching your amplifier to your speakers is crucial for optimal performance and HiFi system longevity. Most amplifiers specify the range of speaker impedance they can manage. It's essential to ensure your speakers fall within this specified range. If the speaker impedance is too low, the amplifier may overheat or distort. Conversely, if it's too high, the system might not achieve the desired volume or dynamic range.
